Quadrant 3 - Management

In order to be able to optimize, the management and control of IT and facility equipment is essential. It is required for operational purpose “does it still work” and it is required for capacity planning “how much is used”. It is a given fact that you have the capacity that you have installed today. Think about the need for tomorrow and decide if it sufficient capacity or not. Having over-capacity is good and that is well spent money. But remove the excessive amount of over-capacity by simply not buying anymore or by switching it off and keeping it in stock while not needed.

To know what you have and how much is utilized you should collect data over time and report the capacity utilization. Use high-thresholds to know that you have to take action, for example by deleting old data or by shutting down unnecessary virtual machines. And use low-thresholds to get notified about over-capacity. Take action to reduce over-capacity, for example by moving some of it to stock or by delaying the procurement of additional capacity.

These KPI’s are defined:

  • Network Management is about the network that is in the data center. In basic, the office network is not in scope because the focus is on the data center. But you can apply it to the office network without a problem. Read more…
  • Storage Management focuses on storage for data. Disks in servers used for operating systems and eventually applications are not in scope. This one is about SAN, NAS, DAS, etc. Read more…
  • Compute Management spans the servers in the data center, regardless the kind of architecture.  Read more…
  • Electrical and Mechanical Management is about collecting usage data from the electrical and cooling systems in the data center. It is of crucial importance to have an historical overview of their utilization, the temperatures and the power consumption over time. Read more…
